Intravenous cholangiography in detection of stone-bearing cystic-duct remnants (so-called re-formed gallbladders)

Summary and conclusions

1. Dilated cystic-duct remnants or so-called re-formed gallbladders containing calculi may be demonstrated by means of intravenous cholangiography in patients who have undergone cholecystectomy. Six illustrative cases have been presented.

2. Stone-bearing dilated cystic-duct remnants probably occur with greater frequency and are very likely responsible for postcholecystectomy symptoms more often than has been appreciated.

3. The need to explore the biliary ducts diligently for calculi at primary cholecystectomy and to remove the entire gallbladder and as much of the cystic duct as possible has been emphasized.
