Comparison of approximate analytical and numerical solutions for heat fluxes in viscous supersonic flow past a body

Abstract

The axisymmetric supersonic laminar flow of a viscous perfect gas past a blunt body is studied over a wide range of Reynolds and Mach numbers. An approximate analytical solution for the distribution of the heat flux, divided by its value at the stagnation point, over the body surface is derived. The expression for the relative heat flux depends only on the body geometry and the pressure distribution over the body surface. To evaluate the accuracy and the range of validity of the formulas obtained, a comparison with numerical solutions of the complete Navier-Stokes equations was carried out for bodies of various shapes, such as spheres, ellipsoids, and paraboloids.
