Weitere Beobachtungen über die Nahrung von Vespiden-Larven

Zusammenfassung

• 1. Zur Beurteilung der Ernährung der Larven konnte Material vonVespa crabro L.,Vespa vulgaris L.,Vespa germanica F. und einerDolichovespula Art herangezogen werden. Dieses Material stammt aus verschiedenen Jahren und auch z.T. aus verschiedenen Jahreszeiten.

• 2. Es konnte auf Grund der histologischen Unterlagen eine Differenzierung der Nahrung für die einzelnen Altersstadien der Larven und auch, bis zu einem gewissen Grade, für die verschiedenen Geschlechtstypen (zunächst Königinnen und Arbeiterinnen) festgestellt werden. Gleichzeitig waren Beobachtungen über Menge und Art der aufgenommenen Nahrung möglich.

• 3. Eine Spezialisierung hinsichtlich des Nahrungserwerbes ist darin gegeben, daß die Angehörigen mancher Nester bezw. Völker schwächer chitinisierte herbivore Beutetiere bevorzugen. So ist es erklärlich, daß im Darm der Larven bestimmter Nester mehr oder weniger umfangreich pflanzliche Zellgewebskomplexe auftauchen.

• 4. Diese Spezialisierung ist zunächst nur als individuell zu bezeichnen. Daß eine artspezifische Spezialisation vorliegen könnte, wird vermutet auf Grund der Befunde anDolichovespula sp. und im Zusammenhang mit Beobachtungen an Ameisen (Wasmann, 1923).

Summary

In every case earlier observations on the food ofVespidæ larvae have been based on insects brought in as prey by the female workers. As different types of substances serve as food for Imagines and Larvae, conclusions which have been drawn from this prey brought in by the workers cannot always be considered as binding.

From histological material the speaker concludes that the food of the larvae is not the same with all wasps. In the case ofVespa vulgaris the contents of the larva's intestine showed a varying quantity of vegetable tissue, coming from herbivorous prey-insects. With larvae ofDolichovespula sp. no such constituents were found. In this case it can only be a question of specialisation with regard to the acquisition of the prey-insects.

ForVespa vulgaris only a few vegetable cell constituents were identified in the larva of queens. The larva of workers contained no vegetable constituents in the intestine. The quantity of chitin remains in the intestine of the larvae was seen to increase in proportion with increasing age. WithVespa germanica vegetable cellremains were established several times, and moreover remains of chitin. In the larvae ofVespa crabro no vegetable remains were observed. A diet predominantly of herbivorous prey-insects thus far has been established only in the case of larvae in one nest ofVespa vulgaris. In all other cases these types of prey-insects were not a constituent of the normal diet; traces of them were only identified in isolated cases.

More precise facts about the different stages of nourishment are contained in the paper (differentiation as to time and age of the larval diet). The results up to now can be considered preliminary.

Les observations antérieures concernant la nourriture des larves desVespidæ s'appuyaient toujours sur l'étude des insectes capturés par les ouvrières. Mais, étant donné que des matières différentes servent de nourriture aux imagos et aux larves, on ne doit pas toujours considérer comme nécessaires les conclusions que l'on a tirées de l'étude de ces captures. En s'appuyant sur des données histologiques, le rapporteur a pu prouver que la nourriture des larves n'est pas identique chez toutes les Vespides. Le contenu intestinal de laVespa vulgaris présente une quantité variable de tissue végétal provenant des insectes herbivores capturés. En revanche, on ne trouve pas d'éléments analogues chez les larves de laDolichovespula sp. Il ne peut donc s'agir ici que d'une spécialisation dans la capture des animaux constituant la nourriture des larves.

PourVespa vulgaris on a trouvé des éléments végétaux cellulosiques chez une seule larve de reine et en petite quantité. L'intestin des ouvrières ne contenait aucun élément végétal. Avec le vieillissement on a constaté une augmentation de la masse des restes de chitine dans l'intestin des larves. ChezVespa germanica des restes cellulosiques végétaux se trouvaient souvent mêlés à d'autres restes de chitine. Chez les larves deVespa crabro on n'a observé aucun reste végétal. On n'a jusqu'alors déterminé de nette prédominance des animaux herbivores dans l'alimentation que chez les larves d'un nid deVespa vulgaris. Dans tous les autres cas, ces captures d'animaux herbivores ne constituaient pas l'alimentation normale; leurs traces n'étaient, en effet, relevées qu'isolément. Le rapport apporte des détails plus précis sur les différents stades de l'alimentation (différenciation de la nourriture des larves dépendant du temps et de l'âge). Les résultats acquis jusqu'à maintenant ont un caractère purement indicatif.
