Distribution of radioactive fallout products in Atlantic water between 10° S and 81° N during the years 1969 and 1972

Summary

The¹³⁷Cs and — in part — also the⁹⁰Sr content was determined in water samples which were taken by the R.V. “Meteor” in the Atlantic between 10° S and 81° N during the years 1969 and 1972 for the radiological working group of the Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut. Thereby, the distribution of the activity concentration in the North/South direction showed a maximum in the surface water between 25° N and 40° N. The corresponding concentration distribution in 100 m and 500 m depth flow similarly to those at the surface.

However, in 1972, at 1000 m depth in 50° N, 60° N — and especially at 70° N and 72° N — unexpectedly high activity concentrations, in one extreme case rising up to eight times the surface values of¹³⁷Cs, were measured. We observed similar anomalies in 1970 in the Mediterranean Sea (Kautsky [1977 b]) and in autumn 1972 in the Atlantic (Kautsky [1977 a]) between Biscay and the Azores.

Zusammenfassung

In Wasserproben, die von FS “Meteor” in den Jahren 1969 und 1972 im Atlantik zwischen 10° S und 81° N (Abb. 1) für die radiologische Arbeitsgruppe des Deutschen Hydrographischen Instituts entnommen wurden, ist der Gehalt an¹³⁷Cs und zum Teil auch⁹⁰Sr bestimmt worden. Dabei ergab die Verteilung der Aktivitätskonzentration in Nord-Süd-Richtung im Oberflächenwasser ein Maximum zwischen 25° N und 40° N. Die entsprechenden Konzentrationsverteilungskurven in 100 m und 500 m Tiefe verlaufen ähnlich wie die an der Oberfläche.

1972 konnten aber in 1000 m Tiefe bei 50° N, 60° N und insbesondere bei 70° N und 72° N unerwartet hohe, im Extremfall bis zum Achtfachen der Oberflächenaktivitätskonzentration ansteigende Konzentrationswerte des¹³⁷Cs gemessen werden. Ähnliche Anomalien beobachteten wir 1970 im Mittelmeer (Kautsky [1977 b]) und im Herbst 1972 im Atlantik (Kautsky [1977 a]) zwischen der Biskaya und den Azoren.

La teneur en¹³⁷Cs — et en partie aussi en⁹⁰Sr — a été déterminée dans les échantillons d'eau qui ont été prélevés par le navire de recherche «Meteor» en Atlantique entre 10° S et 81° N durant les années 1969 et 1972 pour le groupe de travail «radioactivité» du Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut. Cette étude a montré que la distribution de l'activité dans la direction Nord-Sud comporte un maximum dans les eaux de surface entre 25° N et 40° N. La distribution d'activité correspondante aux profondeurs de 100 m et 500 m se comporte de façon analogue à celle de surface.

Cependant, en 1972, à la profondeur de 1000 m, par 50° N, 60° N — et surtout par 70° N et 72° N — des activités anormalement élevées atteignant, dans un cas extrême, huit fois le taux de surface en¹³⁷Cs, ont été mesurées. Nous avons observé des anomalies similaires en 1970 en Méditerranée (Kautsky [1977b]) et en automne 1972 en Atlantique (Kautsky [1977 a]) entre le golfe de Gascogne et les Açores.
