Summary
Wave records taken regularly during 1972 to 1975 from a sea tower in 11 m of water near Cape Town have been spectrally analysed and used to obtain a preliminary description of the wave regime and its association with the distribution of pressure in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean, as hindcast by the South African Weather Bureau. The patterns of energy contours in frequency-time space have been ldentified as swell, wind wave or mixed types: largely depending upon the speed and latitude of the fronts advected in the Westerlies. The pulses of wave energy associated with the relatively fast unimpeded passage of the fronts are not ordinarily sustained for more than two days. It is suggested that because of the high average advection velocity of fronts they may be duration limited, except in the presence of a blocking high or a quick succession of lows; conditions which contribute, together with high wind velocities, to the occurrence of high waves.
The peak of the swell spectra were in the region of 0.075 Hz-two examples of pure swell of about 0.05 Hz were registered. The region just west of Gough Island (some 2000 nautical miles from Cape Town) was the source of swell on a number of occasions.
