Summary
The equations for the horizontal transport of mass and enthalpy as well as the continuity equation are derived for a baroclinic and stationary two-layer ocean on the equatorial β-plane. These equations apply only to the relatively thin and warm oceanic surface layer where the temperature is vertically constant. The lower layer is stipulated to be motionless and arbitrarily deep; it is separated from the upper layer by a density discontinuity. Cold deep water is constantly carried across the level of this interface from the lower into the upper layer; it becomes warmed up there by the net energy input from the atmosphere into the ocean (algebraic sum of incoming radiation flux divergence and outgoing fluxes of sensible and latent heat). The vertical mass flux into the upper layer (“entrainment”) is described by a downward velocity of the interface which is of the order 10−5 cm/s. It is balanced by a horizontal mass outflux across the zonal boundaries of the model which allows for a stationary circulation.
The sea surface wind stress, the net energy input and the entrainment mass flux are considered to be specified functions of the model; the large-scale dynamical implications of this system are investigated, mainly in order to clearify the role of the entrainment mechanism for which parametrizations, but no direct measurements, are available in the literature. Analytical solutions for the special case with no zonal gradients (internal ocean regime) are obtained; they show meridional distributions of horizontal mass transport, slab thickness, and temperature which are in accordance with observations. In particular, the model develops an equatorial countercurrent as well as a relative temperature minimum at the equator. It is concluded, therefore, that the entrainment concept properly describes certain characteristic features of the oceanic surface circulation in tropical-subtropical latitudes.
