Summary
This study examines the larvae ofNematocrema (Crematogaster). These ants are found mainly in Gaboon, but we have also studied specimens from Ivory Coast and Cameroon.
As a résult of large amount of material collected, it has been possible to establish that only three larval stages exist, distinguished by the chetotaxy and the size of the mandibules. The study of the chetotaxy of the larvae of the worker-ants has shown us how much this characteristic can vary from on colony to another. The difference is such that we could almost imagine, on examining extreme cases, that we were dealing with ants of different species. But we have been able to show that these differences have no taxonomic value, for in a large number of colonies larvae are found where the morphology is intermediary between the extremes. There are even cases where individuals belonging to very different types come from the same colony.
To conclude, in this work we are trying to correlate the general aspect of these larvae and the manner in which we can determine the corresponding adults.
