Summary
A linear finite difference internal tide model has been used to predict the baroclinic stream function over a high aspect-ratio shelf slope (16∶1) with realistic topographic and density fields. The topography is typical of the Malin Shelf adge bordering the Rockall Trough and contains a mix of super- and sub-critical slopes. A small damping coefficient was required to make the solution well-behaved. Over the slope, the stream function was dominated by a large clockwise rotating cell with phase slowly increasing towards the ocean and energy concentrated at the upper and lower boundaries. A much larger flux of energy radiated towards the ocean than the shelf and this imbalance suggests that, overall, the slope region is super-critical. On the shelf the results agree with earlier observations of a mode 1 internal tide radiating towards the coast, although the predicted flux was less than expected. It is suggested that the shelfward flux may vary annually since the slope is close to critical and the rate of spring heating in the Rockall Trough determines the angle of the characteristics over the slope region.
