Summary
The exact determination of the thickness of non-solidified marine sediments from echo records has met with difficulties in so far as the speed at which the sound proceeds through various sediments (sand, silt, clay) is usually not known. While measurements made with cores do give us some hints, the influence of the hydrostatic pressure is neglected in core-measuring processes. The only method of obtaining a safe picture of the velocity of sound in the sea-bed is to make measurements on the spot. An instrument with the aid of which such in situ measurements can be carried out will be described in the present paper. The instrument functions according to the sing-around method, and is fully transistorized. A number of difficulties liable to occur in work with this sound-measuring apparatus, will be discussed hereinafter. In addition, the first results measured in marine mud will be published.
