Anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies near the Somali Coast

Infrared analyses from measurements aboard the Nimbus II satellite showed a complex pattern of temperatures near the Somali Coast where upwelling appears during the Southwest monsoon. The patchiness of higher and lower temperatures may be explained by cyclonic and anticyclonic water movements. This statement is confirmed by ship observations.

Infrarot-Analysen aus Messungen an Bord des Satelliten NIMBUS II zeigten ein komplexes Muster von Temperaturen in der Nähe der Küste von Somalia, wo während des Südwestmonsuns Auftriebswasser in Erscheinung tritt. Das beckenweise Auftreten von höheren und niedrigeren Temperaturen läßt sich erklären aus zyklonischen und antizyklonischen Wasserbewegungen. Diese Feststellung wird durch Beobachtungen an Bord von Schiffen bestätigt.

Des analyses infra-rouges de mesures effectuées par le satellite NIMBUS II ont montré un système complexe des températures près de la côte des Somalis où l'on constate une remontée d'eau pendant la mousson de SW. La répartition irrégulière de températures plus hautes et plus basses peut s'expliquer par des mouvements cycloniques et anticycloniques de l'eau comme l'ont confirmé des observations des navires.
