A short account is given of the origin and the tasks of the German Hydrographic Institute, of its organization and of the distribution of its work on the departments, viz., I: Nautical Publications and Nautical Informations, II: Naval Chart Establishment, III: Sea Survey, IV: Occanography and Terrestrial Magnetism, V: Tides, Astronomy, Time Service, VI: Nautical Engineering, VII: Library, Archives, Punching Cards.
