Summary
Neotenics very rarely developed in laboratory groups ofMastotermes workers with or without soldiers, or in incipient colonies headed by primary reproductives. In halfor fully-orphaned incipient colonies, neotenics were produced 35–300 days after the loss of reproductives. Laboratory colonies headed by neotenic pairs, however, produced numcrous neotenics, which the workers immediately destroyed.
Groups of 200 workers produced neotenics of both sexes if male or female neotenics, or neotenic pairs, were added to them, but not if one or both sexes of primary reproductives or penultimate stage reproductive nymphs were added. Control groups without reproductives also produced none. Female neotenics were the most potent inducers of neotenic development; the first neotenics appeared 14–18 days after addition of a female, and an average of 50% of the workers moulted to neotenics by the 71 st day.
