Abstract

On the way to establish doctor's degree in phytomedicine

The general threat modern technology to the environment is widely recognized. Plant protection specialists carry a large part of the related responsibilities. However, their formal and actual qualifications are very limited and frequently insufficient. For example, undergraduates from german universities in agriculture, horticulture and forestry receive only minimal, basic formal training in phytomedicine; whereas, graduated students are nonformally trained, usually on a voluntary basis. Modern days plant production tends to rely more and more on sophisticated plant protection systems. These systems should be guided by fully trained phytomedical specialists with responsibilities to the grower as well as the public. Thus a formal examination or doctorate in phytomedicine is needed as qualification for such professional activities as extension, communication and plant protection planning. Prescriptions of dangerous pesticides needed for agricultural production systems must then be handled through these professionals. A privately supported, registered practioner in phytomedicine, therefore, seems to be the best solution at the present time.
