Abstract

There were no pathological changes in the layers of the rabbit retina 20 and 48 h following the administration of 2 mg/kg body wt. of etomidate (Hypnomidate, Janssen), given intravenously. On the basis of our experiments, it can be said that although retinal changes might be expected after a larger dose and/or after longer exposure, the dosage usually used in clinical practice for induction of narcosis does not bring about pathological alterations.
