College campus violence: The nature of the problem and its frequency

This article examines the phenomenon of violence on college and university campuses in the United States. The nature of the problem is defined, efforts to discern its dimensions are reviewed, and the challenges presented by an infirm database to those who would do something about the problem are outlined. The incomplete diagnosis and reporting of campus violence impede understanding of the phenomenon and its dimensions and compromise the effort to respond. Educational institutions can, however, take steps to facilitate better diagnosis and reporting of violent incidents by promoting their recognition, acknowledgment, and communication. The attainment of these goals will require dealing with the barriers to action presented by certain of the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding violence in the postsecondary educational setting.
