  1. Het komt oms eeuigzins partijdig voor, deze gunstige verhouding der geregtelijke statistiek ten voordeele der Amerikanen bepaald aan het opvoeding-systeem toeteschrijven. Immers de aangekomene vreemden zijn in vele opzigten, het uitschot van andere natiën; — men zoude jnisten maat-staf voor vergelijking vinden, indien men de misdaden, uitsluitend door de inlanders bedreven, voor eene reeks van jaren naging. De inhoud van nevensgaand stukje is grootendeels getrokken uit een artikel der Edimburgh Review (Julij 1853). — Een grondig onderzoek, meer in de bijzonderheden, van het stelsel van openbaar onderwijs der Ver. Staten, zou zeker een nuttig onderwerp van studie opleveren, en voor Nederland, thans vooral, veel nut hebben. — Mogt het bovenstaande dezen of genen onzer lezers daartoe aansporen. — Ter bevordering van dergelijk onderzoek voegen wij hierbij eene opgave der bronnen (meest officieele bescheiden), waaruit de Edimb.
