Summary

Although extremely rare, late onset muscular dystrophy should be included in the differential diagnosis of proximal (girdle) weakness in the elderly. Onset is within the first years of life but the muscular dystrophies progress very slowly and some patients may even come to medical attention for the first time in old age, as in the present case report.

The different types of late onset muscular dystrophy are discussed, emphasizing potential pitfalls in diagnosing dystrophy in the elderly.
