Niet onaardig zegt Prof. Bordewijk: „al datmoeten, datmogen en nietmogen, zonder dat de grondslag voor de verwezenlijking wordt gelegd noch de waarborg voor de vervulling van de eischen aangewezen, doet denken aan het kunststuk van von Muenchhausen, die zich bij het eind van zijn eigen pruik uit het moeras trok”. Hiermee is in het algemeen de eenigszins pijnlijke positie van de sociaal-democratie aangegeven. Ze heeft voor haar verwezenlijking vrij wel volmaakte menschen noodig; zijn echter die menschen er, dan is de S. D. overbodig geworden!
