Summary
A frequently observed characteristic of the open bite is the retroflexed head posture together with mouth-breathing. Normal head posture after treatment and closure of the bite is attributed to an improved breathing-function brought about by dental orthopaedic therapy. An abnormal position of the Atlas in which the dorsal vertebral arc approaches the cranium was also demonstrated with the open bite. The inflammatory processes in the nasopharyngeal area, which often occur with this malocclusion and which, because of their proximity to the Atlas can change its position, are regarded as a possible causal factor.
