Relationship between photosynthesis and denitrification in planted soil

  • Published:
Plant and Soil Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

Laboratory experiments using microcolumns have shown a direct relationship between the photosynthetic activity of plants and the denitrifying activity in the rhizosphere. The approximate N2O production through denitrification is respectively in the ratio 1/2/3 for unplanted soil, soil with maize and soil with bean. An hypothesis to explain these results should be the difference of amino-acid composition and/or amounts between cereal and legume exudates.
