Observation of the anticyclonic eddy formation off the Black Sea coast

Abstract

An anticyclonic eddy with a horizontal dimension of ∼ 20 km travelling north-westwards at a speed of 10 cm/s has been found during an experiment carried out off the Black Sea coast. Dynamic instability owing to horizontal velocity shear could be the reason for its origin. The eddy's passage favours the development of shear instability and the generation of short-period internal waves.
