The use of variable exchange coefficients in the telescopic dynamico-stochastic model is suggested. Through the use of data compiled in the course of a transatlantic survey, we show that consideration of the space-time variability of horizontal exchange coefficients helps to improve the quality of hydrophysical field modelling.
