In an article on the ancient roots of such customs in certain villages in northern Greece, G. Megas points to similar occurrences in Bulgaria, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark (EΘIMA THΣ HMEPAΣ THΣ MAMMHΣ (8 IANOγAPIOγ) [Customs relating to the Midwife's Daily Round (8 January)],Laographia (Athens), Vol. 25, 1967, p. 534–56).
This kind of occurrence is to be compared with the ‘inverted world myth’ which is one of the millenarianist themes in which are reflected, in certain conditions, the grievances and hopes of oppressed groups.
Unless large-scale action is taken for the benefit of mature citizens and providing for effective compulsory schooling, this gap, along with illiteracy, cannot be expected to disappear, until these age-groups die out.

Could it be turned to account even now? In offices where economic plans are drawn up, in international bodies where the growth of equality of access to education is planned and in the commissions responsible for proposing reforms of educational systems, women should participate in the concrete and quantitative study of both the measures to be implemented for the purpose of ‘the elimination of discrimination’ from which they suffer and the results they are expected to achieve. Apparently this stage has not yet been reached.
