Abstract

This papier reviews various aspects of the immune system on an educational basis. The following subjects are discussed: cellular components of the immune system, structure and biological properties of antibodies, the complement system and properties of antigens. The mechanism of the inductor and effector phase of the immune response are described and finally the possibilities for passive immunisation are summarised.

Samenvatting

Dit artikel geeft een beknopt overzicht van de verschillende aspecten van het immuunsysteem. Besproken worden: de cellen die van belang zijn voor het functioneren van het afweersysteem, biochemische en biologische eigenschappen van de antistoffen en enkele aspecten van het complement systeem. De eisen waar antigenen aan moeten voldoen om immunologische afweerreacties op te roepen, worden genoemd, waarna wordt ingegaan op het mechanisme van het onstaan en verloop van de afweerreacties. Tenslotte worden de mogelijkheden tot passieve immunisatie besproken.
