Abstract

A fifth and newAzospirillum species,A. irakense, a nitrogen fixing and pectinolytic bacterium was found associated with roots and rhizosphere of rice in the region of Diwaniya (Qadisya), Iraq. This species produces pectate lyase and pectin methylesterase activities and can fix nitrogen when pectin is the sole carbon source. The four other species ofAzospirillum fail to show a pectinolytic activity.
