Summary
Nine extractants were tried to extract soil Ni from alluvial soils and the amounts of Ni extracted were correlated with Ni uptake by Sorghum. It was found that the Grigg's reagent extracted maximum Ni from soils and CH3COOH the least. A highly significant correlation was observed between Grigg's reagent-extractable Ni and Ni uptake by plants. The extractants which gave significant correlations with plant uptake can be placed in decreasing order: Grigg's reagent (r = .945) > .1N HCl (r = .742) > .5N CH3COOH (r = .705) >N NH4OAc (r = .569) > .1N HNO3 (r = .410) > .1N H2SO4 (r = .404). Three of the extractants, viz. EDTA, K4P2O7 and citric acid, did not show any significant correlation.
