Determination of sulphite in mineral soils

Summary

Two methods were evaluated to determine the concentration of sulphite in sandy loam soils. Use of p-rosaniline-formaldehyde reagent and sodium tetrachloromercurate as extractant proved effective only if a wide soil to extractant ratio was employed. Use of Ellman's reagent in conjunction with this extractant was however, unsatisfactory. Soils exposed to heavy atmospheric pollution differed in sulphite concentration only marginally compared with relatively unpolluted soils. The effect of soil water content on the stability of sulphite in soil was also determined.
