Summary
Cytologic investigation with the phase microscope in connection with toluidinblue stain shows that the granules of the peritoneal mast cells contain heparin. These granules release the heparinin vitro immediately if suspended in distilled water and more slowly when suspended in physiological saline. A granular sceleton remains which apparently consists of protein. The presence of ribose- or desoxyribosenucleoprotein could not be proved. It seems highly probable that the heparin-containing granules of mast cells represent a special form of mitochondria.
