Marietta Johnson was director of the School of Organic Education in Fairhope, Alabama, which she founded in 1907, and which was described by John Dewey in his book,Schools of Tomorrow. This essay is taken, with the publisher's permission, fromThirty Years with an Idea (The University of Alabama Press, 1974), which Mrs. Johnson finished writing shortly before her death in 1938.
