Summary
A qualitative method was employed to study the acetyl α- and β-naphthylamine esterase activity of 200 different strains of mycobacteria. The species M. tuberculosis, M. bovis (Type BCG), and M. phlei possess both enzymes (α- and β-esterase). M. avium and the atypical mycobacteria of Group IIIa (Type Battey) are α-esterase positive: their β-esterase activity is variable, depending upon the differing strains. Strains of Group IV split only the β-isomer of the acetylated naphthylamine. The esterase activity of the scotochromagen strains is very variable. No enzymatic activity could be established for M. kansasii, M. smegmatis, M. fortuitum, M. pellegrini, M. marinum and M. thamnopheos. The derivation of the esterase activity of the mycobacteria can be utilized to differentiate and classify the acid-fast bacteria.
