Summary

Surface colonies ofBacillus anthracis consist, as is known, of hair-like curls. As is shown in this communication, these “curls” are birefringent. The sign of the double refraction ispositive, with regard to the long axis of these “curls”, while the sign in “cords” of colonies of virulent human tubercle bacilli isnegative. Possible causes of this double refraction are discussed.
