Summary
Tests on force of loops using different arm lengths and different alloys. Vertical closing loops are often used with fixed appliances for tooth-movement. The most commonly used wires, namely stainless steel, cobalt chromium-nickel alloy and beta-titanium were tested. Vertical loops of different lengths (6, 7 and 8 mm) with a helix diameter of 3 mm and 1 1/2 turns were bent and measured with a specially designed device. This device consisted of a vertically adjustable spring balance to measure the force and a gauge to measure the activation. The data relating to each 0.5 mm of activation was statistically prepared and calculations were undertaken to determine a) an arithmetical mean, b) the standard deviation as well as c) the miniumum and maximum of each group. A summary of this data was tabulated. The results showed that the force depends on 1. the orthodontic alloy, 2. cross-section of the wire, 3. the length of arm (lever). The influence of the alloy is of great importance. The force given off by a beta-titanium loop, for example, is only a third of the force of a blue elgiloy loop. The use of a different cross-section influences the spring rate remarkably: a .014 inch wire produces only a quarter of the force of a .016×.022 inch wire. The extension of the loop-arm for 2 mm decreases the force more than 50%. The data summarized in the tables and diagrams will enable the orthodontist to choose the optimal force by altering the arm-length, cross-section of the wire or the alloy.
