Summary
Investigations concerning the rigidity of fresh occipital and collar bones, ribs and upper thighs of 30 individuals of different ages and sexes have produced following results: the firmness of the developing bones within the age group of 20 years increases nearly linear and reaches, beyond this age limit, a saturated value of about 26–29 kp/mm2. Bone rigidity in old age is the same as that in middle age. The statistical analysis of the test results shows no significant differences in the hardness between bones of various structural designs. Measurements in different layers of compact bones have given unimportant differences, so that skeleton bones can be considered, with regard to their hardness, homogenous. This statement is naturally valid for the submacroscopical field. Stability differences, for which bone structure is responsible, were not considered. For the determination of hardness we used the Vickers Method.
