Summary

The present study is part of a more comprehensive study of chromosome abnormalities in criminal men in different institutions made at the Cytogenetic Laboratory, Risskov.

A prevalence and incidence study of chromosome abnormalities has been made of 35 patients from a security ward—a ward for very dangerous psychiatric patients—and 23 males admitted to a psychiatric hospital for forensic psychiatric examination. One patient had XYY syndrome, he presented characteristic psychiatric symptoms of this syndrome. Thirty-three patients had a comparatively large Y chromosome (Y/F≧ 0.90) and like patients with the XYY syndrome they had a higher frequency of violent acts. They were often impulsive and violent during their stay at the hospital. Most of them have been sentenced to treatment at a psychiatric hospital.
