Liquid-liquid distribution studies of thorium salicylate with tris-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate

Abstract

A method is proposed for the extraction of thorium(IV) from salicylate media using tris-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate dissolved in toluene as an extractant. The optimum conditions were evaluated from a critical study of pH, salicylate concentration, extractant concentration, period of equilibration and diluent. The method permits the separation of thorium from the associated elements and is applicable to the analysis of monazite sand. The method is precise, accurate, fast and selective.
