Summary
The exposure of a human ear to a very loud pure tone produces not only an increase of the threshold but also modifications of the pitch. These observations lead to a new «two-place» mechanism of the inner ear, where pitch and loudness are perceived at two different and locally separated places of the basilar membrane.
