Summary
The growth rate of the condylar cartilage of the mandible in the young rat exhibits nyctohemeral and seasonal variations. The maximum of tritiated thymidine labelled cells occurs in the middle of the rest time (13 h in our experiments) and in May.
The responsiveness of the condylar cartilage to orthopedic appliances (e. g. postural hyperpropulsor or active retropulsor of the mandible) is greatest when the spontaneous growth rate of the condylar cartilage is greatest.
The bone formation exhibits nyctohemeral and seasonal variations. It reaches a maximum around 19 h and in the May. The bone mineralization only exhibits seasonal variations: the uptake of radioactive calcium is greater in May than in November.
The responsiveness of the condyle is greatest when the spontaneous bone growth is greatest.
For orthodontists, these experiments shed light on the origin of possible variations in the efficiency of removable appliances.
