Summary
Posterior bite blocks have been used clinically to treat malocclusions with excessive lower face height. Bite blocks of 8 mm and 12 mm in thickness were inserted in juvenile (24 to 36 months old) and adolescent (48 to 60 months old) rhesus monkeys and the changes achieved were studied with the help of Radiology, EMG, and Histology. This study deals only with changes seen in the maxilla.
Both the direction and the amount of cranio-facial growth in rhesus monkeys changed as a result of the bite blocks used. In both age groups the teeth were intruded. The normal downward growth of the maxilla observed in the control period was changed to an upward direction. During the experimental phase, the anterior-posterior growth, measured by metal implants, was 3 to 5 times greater on the average than in the control period.
These preliminary results indicate that in particular the vertical effect of functional appliances should be carefully analysed.
