Für den biosynthetischen Vorgang: Indol + Serin → Tryptophan wird ein detaillierter chemischer Reaktionsverlauf vorgeschlagen. Der Verlauf des Abbaus von Tryptophan zu Indol, Brenztraubensäure und Ammoniak wird in ähnlicher Weise gedeutet.
