Summary
The normal haploid chromosome number of the prosobranch speciesPurpura lapillus is 18 in oogenesis. Animals of an isolated population near Roscoff (Bretagne, France) of the same species have been found to possess 13 chromosomes only. The two chromosome sets are compared and their evolutionary relationships briefly discussed.
