Summary
The Gatersleben pearl onion collection includes 32 strains mostly from a local and small-scale cultivation within the districts of Halle and Magdeburg. The systematics of this cultivated plant has been discussed, morphological characters are indicating that it belongs to theA. ampeloprasum complex. The chromosome number and their morphology, here firstly described, strengthen a close relationship between pearl onion and leek. Further cytotaxonomical research of whole the complex is urgently needed.
