Summary
In several larval instars and in pupae ofSialis lutaria L. (Megaloptera) a prothoracic gland was found. This gland is paired and lies on both sides in the prothorax between the two principal tracheal trunks. Figure 1 shows the whole left gland. In Figure 2 a part of a gland with the typical big cell nuclei with chromatin granules is shown. Preliminary experimental investigations confirm the hormonal function of this gland provoking metamorphosis.
