Summary
Isotactic polymethylmethacrylate can be prepared by different preliminary treatment in partially crystalline or amorphous forms as far as crystallinity may be determined by X-ray diffraction. On account of extensive investigations on solution heats of PMMA of various molecular weights and different tacticity we find that by dissolving an amorphous isotactic PMMA a smaller amount of solution heat is set free as may be expected from theoretical extrapolation of solution heat data of a partially crystalline polymerisate. This contradiction can only be explained in a reasonable manner by the assumption that the X-ray-amorphous material already has an important part of neighbourhood order, i.e an order which explains the heat of solution data and the lack of diffraction patterns.
