Summary

1.
An operation for conservative resection of the rectum is described. It is conducted by the perineal route and preserves the sphincteric apparatus of the lower bowel.

The details of seventeen consecutive cases are presented.

There have been no deaths and no serious complications or sequelae and in each case the functional result has been satisfactory.

In three cases the condition was not malignant and the patients were permanently cured.

In fourteen malignant cases there were six recurrences. One patient died suddenly without recurrence nearly three years after operation. Seven are alive and well at periods of from 5 years to 12 1/2 years after operation.

The indications for the operation are briefly considered.
