Sommario
Summary
A finite element model of the Navier-Stokes equations, based on low order (linear or constant) independent interpolations of the variables velocity, pressure and viscous stress, is presented. The influence of various interpolation schemes on the accuracy and the stability of the numerical solutions has been analysed. In particular the spurious short wavelength oscillations which usually deteriorate, also at low Reynolds numbers, the accuracy of F.E. models, have been eliminated by an appropriate combination of interpolation functions, performing as a F.D. staggered mesh.
An upwind scheme, which is an F.E. analog of the well known upwind scheme in F.D., has been generated to overcome the stability limits at increasing Reynolds numbers.
The presented discretization schemes have been applied to the classical driven cavity flow, quite generally adopted for testing new numerical models.
