f(x; ϕ) is a probability density function if the distribution is continuous; in the case of discrete distribution it should be replaced by a probability function. A slightly different formutation is needed for the two cases, in some contexts.
AsWald justly remarked (op. cit. p. 35–36), a rule of inference with the numbern of trals fixed can be looked upon as a special (“degenerate”) case of a sequential rule. It will be characterized by the fact that form=1, …,n−1 all the substers exceptR N+1m are empty while form=n the subsetR N+1m is empty.
