Abstract
Kidney homotransplantations were performed in dogs after bilateral nephrectomy. Azathioprine (Imuran) was given in daily doses of 5 mg/kg as the only therapy, so as to assess its influence on homograft retention. The average survival of the animals was 24.66 days, i.e. slightly longer than in the controls (18.2 days). Light and polarization microscopy revealed that azathioprine had affected neither the early nor the late phase of homograft reaction, except for a slight delay in the start of the rejection process and its focal character. The subsequent course of the reaction proceeded unhindered.
