Summary
The correlation between serum resistance of E. coli strains and their ability to produce and maintain renal infection for 3 weeks in the rat was tested by applying two models of experimental pyelonephritis. In oestrogen pre-treated rats only serum resistant strains were able to induce pyelonephritis. A corresponding difference between serum sensitive and resistant strains is not demonstrable when using experimentalobstructive pyelonephritis.
