Summary
When growing under iron deficiency and maximal aeration in a gluconate or pyruvate medium, wild strains ofKlebsiella andEscherichia coli accumulated 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid and amino acid derivates of this acid. Without aeration these substances could not be detected in the same medium. 60 out of 72 capsule type test strains ofKlebsiella, 26 of 30 freshly isolatedKlebsiella- and 12 of 20Escherichia coli-strains behalfed in this way.
