Summary
The comparative study of the cardiac volumes and spiroergometric results of healthy untrained and trained persons as well of patients with cardiac defects showed:
-
1.
The cardiac volumes and the O2 uptake and O2 pulse, respectively, of trained test subjects are, as an expression of adaptation of the cardiopulmonary system, significantly higher than for untrained persons. For patients with cardiac defects the volume of the heart is usually found to be increased, but the spiroergometric results are considerably below normal.
-
2.
It is obvious, therefore, that with healthy persons and athletes there exists a positive correlation between the cardiac volume and O2 uptake and O2 pulse, respectively. In patients with cardiac defects the relation is disturbed because of the pathological hemodynamics. Positive correlations could not be established, except for males with Botalli's duct.
-
3.
The principal difference between the increase in the size of hearts of athletes and patients with cardiac defects is clearly shown by this correlative study.
